Daniel R. Bois was born the son of an artist
in Annapolis Maryland at the Naval Hospital forty odd years ago. That's
why he says ider when most people say idea. As a student, Dan would blaze
through his assignments only to flip his paper over and commence doodling,
sketching, or what us artsy types refer to, as "releasing the muse".
These etchings would later be studied by no one in particular, the PTA
and NASA and one would overhear things like, "There so earthy, raw
and primitive", or "It's so real, I feel like I'm flying. I
can even taste the airline peanuts", or "Real-life breasts don't
really get that large, do they?"
Like most of the greats, he wanders through life a carefree minstrel.
Paying his mortgage every month and working for the city of San Diego
for the last 26 years. He still finds time for those creative juices to
come boiling to the surface and spill out onto whatever medium is handy;
be it paper, inkjet printer or a stage at the Del Mar Fair with one of
his many Rock'n'Roll bands.
Soaking up aviation history and art like a really efficient paper towel,
his influences include Frank Frazetta, Wallace Wood, Mark Schultz, Bruce
Timm, Alex Raymond, Hal Foster, & Aviation Artist Robert Taylor. Most
of the living space in his La Mesa home is filled with books by these
folks, a wife, two kids, 6 cats and two dogs. In addition to his art,
his hobbies include playing the guitar, restoring old VW's, and traveling
to WWII aircraft shows.
Dan is a self-taught graphic artist who consistently wins praise and a
paycheck from the City of San Diego. You can check out his artwork on
Galactic Graffiti.
